Spiritual Nourishment

“Good morning, Lord! What are we doing today?”
Have you ever started your morning by talking to God before even getting out of bed?

I don’t do it every day, but I try to. I wonder what the day will entail and ask for what I think I’ll need during the day (guidance, patience, strength, etc.); and as I spend time with Him, I listen for anything He might want to share with me.

Sometimes this conversation before and while I get up is all I have time for in the morning. Other times, I know I need more. So, I grab my Bible and maybe a devotional book and find a place where I can spend one-on-one time with my Lord.

It’s not just in the morning when I need the peace and spiritual renewal He offers. It’s anytime—morning, noon, night…during and after a long day…when I’ve blown it again in some way…when I just can’t take anymore…and when I just want to cuddle up and spend time with Him.

God is our source of life filling us with peace, energy, strength, and so much more. What happens when we skip this time with Him? I find that I get irritable and restless. I worry more, lose my focus, and become stressed out easily.

When I’m separated from my source of life, I start to wither, much like a leaf that gets severed from the stem.
Remain in me, and I will remain in you. For a branch cannot produce fruit if it is severed from the vine, and you cannot be fruitful unless you remain in me. Yes, I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who does not remain in me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. (John 15:4-6 NLT)
To receive spiritual nourishment, we must stay connected to God and spend time with Him. The more time we spend with God, the better we get to know Him personally. We grow to trust and depend on Him more, and through our relationship with Him we receive the nourishment only the Lord can provide.

  2. Great post, Laura. It is so important to stay connected to The Vine. And having that conversation with God before we rise each day will certainly help us with whatever we may face.

    Blessings,
    Joan

  3. Hi Laura - so true - When I’m separated from my source of life, I start to wither - I felt that earlier this week as i have been avoiding my quiet times in favour of some other also good thing, but felt like my life source, my balance, my light, was withering. Great post

    1. Thanks Tracy! I often wonder why my mood, emotions, and everything else have gone sour, and then I remember I've missed my time alone with God. What a difference it makes!

      In Christ,
      Laura

  4. I've had times when I'm far from God only because I've let my quiet time slide. I am thankful that He's been patient and I am now enjoying sweet communion with Him each morning. I definitely find that my days are better and my spirit is more peaceful.

  5. Great reminder! I love waking up to God in the morning. Heard once the first thing some people say in the morning is "Good God, it's morning!" and others say, "Good morning, God." to be honest I have been both. LOL but pray to more the second one!

  6. Laura,
So much of what you said here could have come right off my own keyboard. I love my early morning times with God and usually can't wait to get up and enjoy them, but I've also come to realize (the painful way) that I need time with Him through the day, too, that when I neglect to connect, or to stay connected, I too end up irritable, "withered," stressed out more easily, all of that. To be a conduit of His grace, I need to take time to soak it up in His company. Thanks for the confirmation/reminder.

  8. I can relate so much to this! Starting off the the day with God seems to help me through whatever I face. It doesn't mean my day is perfect, it just means that my focus changes from the time I spend with God. Thank you for sharing!
