Let go – My One Word 2014

Let go.

This is my One Word for 2014. I guess it’s more of a phrase, but whatever. This is what God gave me.

I prayed. I asked Him what He wanted me to focus on this year. And one morning, as I stared out the window, it was a clear thought—let go. I wasn’t sure if it was His answer, or something I was thinking, and I wanted to be sure. So, I kept praying and asking.

Over the next couple of days, it was always on my mind, and I knew this is what God was leading me to.

Let go.

It scared me. It wasn’t the word (or phrase) I wanted. I think I mentioned that to Him, but instead of giving me a different word, He gave me time to get used to it.

Fear turned to acceptance. If this was His answer, I knew there was a reason. He has a purpose for it.

I considered using the word Release so it really would be one word. It seems like the same meaning, but Let go is different, and now I like it. It’s personal. Like a gift chosen just for me.

I imagine Him whispering, “Let go” when I’m clinging too tightly to something.

Or softly saying, “Let me have it” when I’m struggling to remember God has it all under control.

Let go.

His tender encouragement and guidance.

His gentle instruction, and sometimes, a reprimand.

Let go…my One Word for 2014.

Do you have a One Word for this year? Maybe it’s two words or a phrase. Will you share it in the comments—what’s your one focus for 2014?

In Christ,
Laura

  1. I love this Laura. I had a phrase last year -- simply love, simply life and simply give. I didn't choose a word this year. Looking forward to watching your word unfold this year.

  4. I love that you have a phrase instead of one word. It shows how our God works personally & individually in our lives. May He bless you as you focus on the words He chose for you this year. My one word is "Faith": And without faith it is impossible to please God."(Heb. 11:6). Blessings!

    1. Faith...a great word for the year! Without faith, it's impossible to see God's work and blessings. God bless!

  5. My one word this year is "Focus". Last year God gave me the word "Balance" and I thought "really?? what am I supposed to do with that?" But God pulled through in some amazing ways last year and boy did I ever learn how to balance in my life. God opened so many new doors last year that I needed to focus on "balance" in order to make it through the year. This year's word "focus" can be used in several ways for me. Focus on God, focus on others, focus on where He puts me, etc, etc. I'm excited to see how God will prove Himself faithful again this year!

    1. Thanks for your comment Cheryl. I smiled when you explained what you thought about the word "balance." I think I felt the same way when God gave me "praise" as my word for 2013. I was busy complaining at the time, and thought, really? "Praise??" But it was a good word for the year. (I haven't had a chance to write a recap yet.) God bless!

  6. Oh I just love this Laura! I so understand when God gives us a word we're not sure we want, but we trust He knows better, right? And I think you're right, release and Let Go are different. Praying you would experience freedom and joy when you Let Go!

  7. "Let go" sounds more personal to me, too, than "release." It's a scary choice, but one I know the Lord will equip you to carry out. It makes me think of the Welcoming Prayer that I've been working through the past several months, welcoming what God sends by letting go of my own agendas and fears and comforts. I've chosen "compassion" this year (also a scary one for me).

    1. I've heard that if it doesn't scare us a little then it's not the right word, and I agree. It can be scary when God stretches us outside of our comfort zone...but it can also be exciting! Bless you Lisa!

  8. Thanks for sharing your word Laura. My word is "happy" - I think perhaps because work keeps taking precedence over my joy each day, and God doesn't want me to keep missing out. [Here is the link to my post. It's not much, but finding/taking the time to actually put it together is already a step in the right direction for me.]

    1. Good for you for making it your focus this year to not miss out on life because of work! It's so easy to get caught up in all that needs to be done and miss out on the moments right now. God bless Nina!

  9. Isn't it interesting when we wrestle with God (at first) only to discover His word is the best. "Let Go". Now that's a gift. :)

  11. Sometimes God's message doesn't fit into one word, does it? The best I could discern is to start my year with one word and keep it as long as I need it, and then move on to another of several that keep swirling around me. Praying for your year, Laura!
