What If?

Last night, we got into a What if? conversation. Not the kind that causes worry, but rather wonder.

What if my husband and I hadn’t gone out the night we met? What if we’d each chosen to do something else that night…would we have met each other at a different time? It seems unlikely.

Which means everything since then wouldn’t have happened. Or would have occurred in completely different ways.

It made me keep thinking and wondering about how we live our days and how any given decision can affect the future…

What if we focused on the positive instead of the negative?

What if we spent less time worried or angry?

What if we were less offended by all the things that offend us?

What if we decide to choose joy despite circumstances?

How would everything be different? Better?

Think about it.

How much time do we waste stewing about the past or worried about the future? {Tweet this}

Every day, we have the choice to spend our time holding on to anger and unforgiveness…or letting it go.

We have the choice to turn to God, to walk closer to Him, and to receive and grow in His love and forgiveness. Or we can choose not to.

What if we wonder (not worry) and let the what ifs help us make better daily choices?

In Christ,
Laura

  1. Oh, I agree, Laura! It's so easy to do negative "what ifs" but I love to challenge myself with positive "what if" questions. What if I surrendered my all to Jesus with complete abandon ... nothing held back? That's my "what if" prayer this morning. Blessings - thanks for this great encouragement!

  8. Laura, hi from Mary's! I love 'what' questions more than those 'why' ones. Thanks for gently showing us how our musings can lead us to the one who gives us 'everything for life and godliness.'

    Bless you ...

  11. Yes, Laura. "What if" changes our lives if we change our perspective. Like this, "Every day, we have the choice to spend our time holding on to anger and unforgiveness…or letting it go. We have the choice to turn to God, to walk closer to Him, and to receive and grow in His love and forgiveness. Or we can choose not to." Thanks for the reminder.

I love this emphasis because you're bringing to mind all the amazing ways God has orchestrated circumstances in my own life.

  14. This is an important way to frame this, Laura: "What if we wonder (not worry) and let the what ifs help us make better daily choices?" I need to take this advice to heart.

  15. My husband and I have had very similar conversations. Sometimes the 'what if' game can be scary, but you make a great point: we gotta trust God now because right this minute we're making decisions that'll affect the rest of our lives. Well, that's a little scary to think about too. But God's working in it all.

    Great post.

  16. HA! I LOVE this post! We played a similar game with our kids when they were young. We gave them a scenario and asked them how they would resolve it. The resolutions had to meet spiritual, social, and practical criteria. Then when they'd thought of the resolution, we'd throw in a monkey wrench that made that solution not work. How could they find a new solution? Sometimes they answered: "Let go and let God."
