Appreciate the Boring Moments

I remember as a kid complaining to my mom about how bored I was, usually with some dramatic flair. I'm booored! There's nothing to doooo!

The thought struck me again the other day, out of the blue (without the drama.) But this time, as soon as I thought I was bored, I knew it was okay.

It's been a while since life felt calm enough to have even a moment to feel bored. It didn't last long, but it made me think about life.

We go, go, go all the time. We fill every minute of the day with activities, social media and working or playing on electronics. Or we spend our days just trying to keep up, not because we want to be busy, but because we're overwhelmed by life.

That's how it's been for me, season after season of feeling overwhelmed. Reminding myself to take one step at a time, one day at a time.

So thinking even for a moment that I was bored took me by surprise...and then I decided to appreciate it.

There's nothing wrong with having a few boring moments in a day. It allows us to slow down. To be present where we are. And just breathe. {Tweet this}

God Works As We Share

I’m not always the best at sharing parts of my life with others. I wrestle with whether or not to share, with whom, and how much I want to put out there. I don’t want to admit how much I struggle in difficult situations and I don’t want to burden someone else with my worries.

But, I’m learning that sharing our stories (even small parts of them) is often the way we will see God use it for good. {Tweet this}

This past summer was heartbreaking for me when I lost my mom to cancer. In the weeks before, I spent time visiting with her, which kept me out of town quite a bit. During a downtime, I emailed a friend to update her on how things were going.

She replied, “I’ve been thinking about you almost all the time because my mom has been visiting this week—it’s really made me appreciate her visit even more.”

As hard as my days were, God gave me a glimpse of how He was using what I was going through in someone else’s life. A tiny reminder that He can use anything for good—even something that didn’t feel so good to me.

I told my mom what my friend said and despite her pain, it made her smile. It felt like it came full circle. Because I shared my situation, my friend felt comfortable to tell me her experience, and I was able to share that with my mom—how her situation was helping someone she didn’t even know. It was a little bit of light interrupting a dark day.

We don’t always get to see how God works, but sometimes, He blesses us with a small peek into His work. {Tweet this}

Is there a time when you got to see how God was using something in your life to help someone else?

What If?

Last night, we got into a What if? conversation. Not the kind that causes worry, but rather wonder.

What if my husband and I hadn’t gone out the night we met? What if we’d each chosen to do something else that night…would we have met each other at a different time? It seems unlikely.

Which means everything since then wouldn’t have happened. Or would have occurred in completely different ways.

It made me keep thinking and wondering about how we live our days and how any given decision can affect the future…

What if we focused on the positive instead of the negative?

What if we spent less time worried or angry?

What if we were less offended by all the things that offend us?

What if we decide to choose joy despite circumstances?

How would everything be different? Better?

Think about it.

How much time do we waste stewing about the past or worried about the future? {Tweet this}

Every day, we have the choice to spend our time holding on to anger and unforgiveness…or letting it go.

We have the choice to turn to God, to walk closer to Him, and to receive and grow in His love and forgiveness. Or we can choose not to.

What if we wonder (not worry) and let the what ifs help us make better daily choices?

Laura

When Routine Becomes an Idol

There's something about having a routine that's comforting. We can accomplish tasks without having to give them much thought and there are few decisions to make because we're used to a regular pattern.

It's normal for us to want to get back into a routine after a vacation or summer break. It's what we're used to.

But, as with anything, too much of even a good thing can have consequences. Like when keeping the routine becomes so important it keeps us from other things in life.

When does a routine become an idol? {Tweet this}

When it takes us away from family and friends because that time is not in the schedule.

When we miss out on an experience because we couldn't be spontaneous.

When we can't see God at work because we're too focused on keeping our schedule.

When the routine is interrupted and it ruins our day, and in turn, the day of those around us because of how the interruption affected us.

When we see a broken routine as a negative reflection and use it to beat ourselves up.

Having a routine isn't a bad thing. It's when it has control over us that it becomes a problem. {Tweet this}

When our routine takes precedence over everything else or when we expect others to constantly work around us, that's when our routine has become an idol.

Laura

Surrender

My One Word for this year is Enough, and it feels like surrender to me.

There are certain things I want control over, but I'm surrendering—letting go of the thought that I have any control at all. It's not easy.

I have to surrender thinking I can fix a situation and trust that God will show me if there's something I can do. It means being still and waiting.

Every day, I'm surrendering my worry to God, knowing that He has not forgotten us or walked away. That knowledge has to be enough to keep me moving forward.

My days are not how I thought they would be, but I know God is in control. I'm focused on Him and I'm watching for His work, down to the smallest of ways.

Waving the white flag of surrender is hard. It feels like losing, but I know it's not. When we surrender to God, the gain is always greater than the loss. Even when we can't see it yet. {Tweet this}

Collected Tears

“I know He’s there, I know He hears us, and He’s collecting our tears…and sometimes that has to be enough.”
I wrote this in an email to a friend a couple of weeks ago, after a particularly difficult evening. Although I didn’t look through Scripture at the time, I specifically remembered a verse that says God collects our tears.

Since that evening, I’ve been thinking about it and rereading the verse.

You keep track of all my sorrows.
You have collected all my tears in your bottle.
You have recorded each one in your book.

If I’m honest, part of me kept thinking, So? What good does that do? But, as I’ve been pondering the verse, I realize now that there’s a deeper, richer meaning.

I started thinking of a friend who listens to another’s heartache. Without interrupting or trying to fix it, she just listens and validates the feelings being expressed.

She lets her friend cry without judgement or condemnation. There’s no shaming for how she feels because emotions are real, even if someone else can’t fully understand them.

This friend provides comfort and compassion. She offers strength and encouragement. She prays with her, and for her. She encourages her friend to keep moving forward, despite everything threatening to hold her back.

This is an amazing friend…but God is so much more.

God listens to our heartache. He gives us His full attention and is not distracted by multiple things going on, or other things on His to-do list. {Tweet this}

He lets us cry and fall asleep from fatigue, then encourages us to get back up and keep trying.

Although He can fix it, He often doesn’t because He knows that what we have to walk through will lead us to places we never imagined we could go.

He doesn’t judge or condemn, even when He shows us where we need to change our actions or way of thinking.

He keeps track of our sorrows with love and compassion, but He does not keep record of our sins—also out of love and compassion.

There is no shaming for how we feel, because He knows our emotions are real. He created us to feel, and knows some of His children feel deeper than others. He collects our tears, knowing and understanding what caused them. {Tweet this}

God stays close with comfort and support, while giving strength and encouragement. He knows when it’s time to rest, when it’s time to persevere, and when it’s time to move forward.

He sees everything threatening to hold us back, but knows the future He has planned for us…and knows that one day, all tears will be dried.

He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.

In Christ,
Laura

Hope for Your Future

“There is hope for your future,” says the Lord.

There is hope for your future because…

…of who God is (not who we are.) {Tweet this}

…of His great love for us.

…God keeps His promises.

…He does not change.

…of how He’s worked in the past, and how He’s at work today.

…how He sees us (not how we see ourselves.)

…nothing is impossible for Him. {Tweet this}

…God sees us, hears us, and knows what we’re going through.

…He sees the big picture of our lives that we cannot see.

…God knows the plans He has for us.

“For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

Embrace the Moments

Embrace

Life doesn’t always go the way we would like it to. There are unexpected twists and turns that move us in a different direction than we had planned.

That’s where we have a choice—to get stuck in the way we wish things were or embrace where God has us and what He’s blessed us with.

Maybe you don’t see your current circumstances as a blessing. I get that. Sometimes I don’t either.

But even in the midst of difficult situations, we can still experience joy, love, and happiness. And most especially, a close relationship with God.

If we focus on what we don’t have, we will miss these moments.

But, when we accept where we are, then we are able to watch for the moments that matter. {Tweet this} When we watch for them, we will experience them. And embrace them as memories.

One Expectation for Christmas

I’m joining the Five Minute Friday community with Kate Motaung…5 minutes, no rewriting, and a one word prompt…
Joy

It’s supposed to be the most joyful time of every year. But for many, it’s not. Illness, loneliness, grief, depression, emotional or physical pain, unemployment, and for so many other reasons, December can be a very difficult month.

The truth is, every month can be just as difficult, but the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas come with heavy expectations and extra pressure. And when those expectations of happiness and the perfect Christmas are not met, the letdown takes its toll.

What if we went into the season with only One expectation for a good Christmas?

Joyfulness comes in the One who came to us—Jesus Christ. {Tweet this} He didn’t arrive expecting celebrity fanfare and an overdone celebration. He came as a vulnerable baby boy through Whom we see God’s glory.

December 25 will come and go just as it does every year. Families will get on each other’s nerves and gifts will lose their sparkle. But the Gift of Jesus will never grow old.

What are your expectations during the Christmas season?

Life is a Journey

I’m joining the Five Minute Friday community with Kate Motaung…5 minutes, no rewriting, and a one-word prompt…

When my daughter was young, we debated when to start her in kindergarten. Because of her birthday, we had the option of starting when she was five years old, or waiting until she turned six. Although the kindergarten teachers did not know us or our daughter, I decided to ask for their opinions, and I’ve never forgotten what one teacher told me.

Life is a journey, not a race.

I don’t remember the rest of her email, but I still think about that one sentence. Do I see life as a journey or a race?

A journey takes time. A race needs speed.

A journey means there will be waiting, but it also gives time to breathe. It allows for time to enjoy the days we are given, the good ones and even the bad.

A race requires me to rush through life, always aiming for the next goal. It means I might neglect what’s around me now, only to look back at what I missed.

A journey means there will be seasons I would like to avoid, but there is purpose in every season, even when I can’t figure out what that purpose is. Those same seasons exist in a race—they are inevitable.

A journey gives time to feel…and time to rest. A race might help me ignore the emotions, but there is different pain to be felt and little time to relax.

A journey or a race?

I choose the journey.

How about you?

In Christ,
Laura

He is Here

I’m joining the Five Minute Friday community with Kate Motaung…5 minutes, no rewriting, and a one-word prompt…
I have called you back from the ends of the earth,
    saying, ‘You are my servant.’
For I have chosen you
    and will not throw you away.
Don’t be afraid, for I am with you.
    Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you.
    I will hold you up with my victorious right hand.

I love these verses from the book of Isaiah.

They remind me that even when I don’t feel God close to me, He is here. We are chosen by Him, and we will not be forgotten. {Tweet this}

When He calls me to something I feel unqualified for, He is here to lead me. We are chosen and called, and He does not expect us to work alone.

When I feel afraid and alone, He is here to comfort and strengthen me. We are chosen by Him and He walks with us.

When I feel discouraged, He is here to encourage me. He has chosen us, not to be dismayed and disappointed, but to be built up by His strength.

When I feel weak and powerless, He is here to help me. We are His chosen people, and He does not leave us in a helpless position.

He is here. He is with us. God strengthens us and helps us—even holding us up with His victorious right hand.

In Christ,
Laura

God's Protection

I’m joining the Five Minute Friday community with Kate Motaung…5 minutes, no rewriting, and a one-word prompt…

Protect

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I remember thinking that I would never be able to protect her like I could before she was born. I knew I would do the best I humanly could to protect her, but every parent knows there is only so much we can do. Children will get hurt, sick, lost, defiant, and they will have to make their own mistakes.

The truth is, no one can protect my child the way God can.

He sees all when my sight is limited. {Tweet this}

He knows best when I’m swayed by emotion. {Tweet this}

And He can intervene unbeknownst to me.

So often I don’t understand the what and why of what’s going on in my life, but I know God does.

And sometimes that knowledge has to be enough for me.

In Christ,
Laura

Under Attack

I’m joining the Five Minute Friday community with Kate Motaung…5 minutes, no rewriting, and a one word prompt…
Lose

I've been under some serious spiritual attack for a while now. In every area of my life the enemy is working to wear me down.

My friends have also been under attack and this constant assault has us weary. Feeling as if we can't get to the surface for air, we're losing the strength to fight this battle.

And that's exactly what Satan wants—for us to give up, to turn away from God, and stoop to his level.

He wants us to lose ourselves to him. (I got a creepy feeling just writing that.)

But our Jesus has already defeated the devil through His death and resurrection!

And I'm reminding myself that it's through Jesus' victory where I can draw the strength to persevere.

In Christ,
Laura

We Have to Decide

I’m joining the Five Minute Friday community with Kate Motaung…5 minutes, no rewriting, and a one word prompt…
Decide

Every day we make choices. Whether consciously or unconsciously, we make decisions all day long.

What to have for breakfast...what to wear...which chores to get done...how much time to spend scrolling through Facebook...when to go to bed, etc.

But the most important decision of all is whether or not to follow Jesus.

What do you mean? I'm a Christian…of course I follow Jesus.

Yes, but every day, we're met with challenges and how we react makes a difference.

Will I act out of my own desires or follow Jesus’ example? We have to decide.

Every day is hard. Temptations threaten to pull us down a different road than the one God wants us to follow.

We have to decide...my will or His?

It's a choice we have to make...today, tomorrow, and every day after that.

In Christ,
Laura

God Works Through Our Stories

I’m joining the Five Minute Friday community with Kate Motaung…5 minutes, no rewriting, and a one word prompt…

Share

Last weekend, I had the privilege of speaking at a women's event. During the Bible study I was presenting, I shared a story about one of my less than stellar moments.

It wasn't something I particularly wanted to share, but rather a story I knew God wanted me to share.

Because when we share our stories, we let others know it's okay to share their stories.

When we let someone see the moments we'd rather not talk about, that someone knows she's not the only one with those kinds of moments.

God works through our stories...the good ones, and the messy day, less than proud ones.

He takes the experiences we'd like to bury and gives them meaning.

He leads us to share, and when we do, He uses it for His glory.

In Christ,
Laura

Reflecting on God’s Presence

I’m joining the Five Minute Friday community with Kate Motaung…5 minutes, no rewriting, and a one word prompt…

Reflect

This time of year invites us to reflect back over the past months before starting fresh with a new year.

I’ll be honest…some years I don’t want to look back or remember what the year held. I’d rather it slip out the door quietly while I look forward.

This could be one of those years. It. Was. Hard.

But, I find myself remembering anyway. The good times and the bad. And looking for God in both.

He was there in all of it. And that’s what I want to reflect on.

God’s presence in the time of trouble.

God’s comfort in the midst of turmoil.

God’s protection when I couldn’t see it.

Remembering He was there then reminds me that He is here now. And He will be here tomorrow. And next week. And next year.

Even when I can’t see His hand, He is at work.

Even when I can’t feel His presence, He is with me.

Every day. Every hour. Every minute.

Are you looking back over the year before the next one begins? Where can you see God was at work…even if you couldn’t see it at the time?

In Christ,
Laura

Dwell Here with Me

I’m joining the Five Minute Friday community with Kate Motaung this weekend…5 minutes, no rewriting, and a one word prompt…
Dwell
Dear Child,
Come. Dwell here with me.
You can stay as long as you like, which I hope will be forever.
You don't have to explain why you're here or what's troubling you. I already know. But I'm here with you, and no one listens or understands better than I do. So, talk to Me when you are ready.
Rest here with Me. Let Me strengthen you and give you peace—peace you won't find anywhere or in anything else.
Love,
Jesus
